Why coffee is not the solution to boost natural energy

Coffee in the morning, coffee break, coffee date, coffee meeting- coffee has become our wingman in everyday activities. In many cultures, coffee is considered an aphrodisiac as it excites our mind and increases the amount of dopamine the body produces. Coffee is considered a natural energy supplement because caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increasing alertness and reducing fatigue, so it makes sense we drink it when we feel tired (or even when we don’t). But as you’ve probably noticed, your body builds tolerance to these temporary effects and if you’re like us, you’ve already had a second cup before lunch. Falling prey to the cycle of using caffeine to just stay awake is harmful to both your body and your productivity.

Knowing the effects of coffee on your body may help you think twice about using it as an energy booster.

Stress on your body

The heavy concentration of caffeine in coffee increases a stress hormone called catecholamines. This hormone is known to aggravate an excessive production of cortisol, commonly referred to as the stress hormone, which causes insulin resistance, rapid heart rate, and increased blood pressure. and causes insulin levels to rise. Inflammation is a common side effect of drinking excessive coffee, which in turn also might make you feel sluggish and uninterested. These side effects are harsh on your body, causing you to feel stressed and strung out.

Higher risk of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Drinking excessive coffee may trigger insulin resistance, interfering with your cells’ capabilities to manage blood sugar levels. This can result in high blood sugar, known to cause arterial deterioration and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Loss of nutrients

We get it, coffee is delicious and pairs perfectly with breakfast, but excessive amounts can lead to a  loss of vital nutrients, particularly calcium, magnesium, and potassium. If that doesn’t worry you, here are the functions of those nutrients:

Calcium: supports strong bones, muscles, and heart.

Magnesium: helps regulate blood pressure and maintain a steady rhythm in your heart beat.

Potassium: manages water balance and retention, and known to help prevent kidney stones.

If you have a deficiency in any of these nutrients, consider cutting back or eliminating coffee from your lifestyle.

Interference with medication

You may have heard that grapefruit interferes with certain medications - but did you know coffee can too? Interfering with the standard process of detoxification of the liver, coffee can not only hinder the efficacy of some medications, such as levothyroxine and tricyclic antidepressants, but it can also create detrimental effects as a result of it.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it is safe to consume up to 400 grams of caffeine per day - so it’s best to stay within that limit. Keep in mind that coffee is not the only thing that has caffeine - sodas, teas, and energy drinks also have a substantial amount.   We understand that avoiding caffeine all together may not be an option, so try substituting it with herbal teas or citrus-flavored water.Instead of coffee opt for herbal teas such as green tea, matcha and even reishi tea. Try sipping through water that has been flavoured with citrus and herbs such as limes, lemons, mint or spearmint.
